Talking in Your Sleep

We meet in sleep's womb,

Swim into our souls' sanctuary,

Our breathing circulating our dreams' blood,

Through our cells, into our slumbering tongues,

Where our love's vocabulary

Accumulates the passion and tenderness

We'll speak to each other, when we awaken.

A mumbled word or garbled phrase

Occasionally escapes, on a fugitive exhalation;

Rarely, a coherent, unadorned sentence

Makes its way to freedom,

Such as the one you whispered late last night,

When sleep spoke you, most intimately:

"I love you, very much."
