Making Changes
Over the past dozen months, taking tentative steps,
We've shared in making measured investments
Calculated to alter the aura of the room where we sleep
Whenever you invite me to spend the night, by your side:
Fresh paint, in a soft, warm tone of beige;
A pair of tan horizontal window shades; bright-white ceiling fan;
Quilt, gold-and-cream comforter, throw pillows, hotel-grade sheets.
But this afternoon, like giddy, sleepless Christmas Eve kids
Hoping to glimpse St. Nick placing gifts around the tree,
We remove all the drawers from your bureau and highboy,
Anticipating tomorrow's arrival of the carpet layers
And, later that afternoon, the furniture deliverymen,
Bringing your new white-lacquer Italian bedroom suite —
The first major changes to your home, in the last few decades . . .
Changes taking the shape of intimacy itself,
As we redecorate our future, one room, one togetherness, at a time.
