Excusing, Forgiving, and Forgetting

In a matter of days, months, years, decades, generations,

Despite the proliferation of memorials to the eleven million victims

(Six million of them Magen David innocents,

Five million bystanders caught in the Nazi crossfire),

The frantic construction of Holocaust museums worldwide,

The devising of cutting-edge Final Solution curricula,

The marketing of testimonies, studio movies, documentaries, fictions,

The conducting of perennial Yom HaShoah ceremonies,

Mankind will have begun its treasonable forgetting, damnable letting-go,

Of the crucial, vital causes, the specific details,

The real reasons why the German people turned Aryan, barbarian, evil.

Sadly, the explanation for the fading is too painfully explainable,

Easily rationalized, if not satisfactorily justified,

Via historical vicissitudes, traumatic social and economic upheavals,

Which, ultimately, people use to validate their lethal means,

When they attempt to project their frailties, flaws, fears

Onto those they degrade, denigrate as kikes, Untermenschen, vermin,

In order to hide the shame, mortification of their own shortcomings.

Ah, but the forgetting, jettisoning isn't only inevitable, it's expected,

Par for the I. G. Farben, J. A. Topf und Söhne, Adam Opel course,

In light of the exoneration perpetrators crave when expiating,

With herd-mentality contrition, their sadistic crimes against humanity.

And so, knowing this, as, with predictable certainty, we do —

That our worst, most unimaginable depravities and perversities

Are, in the final analysis, excusable, forgivable, forgettable —

We continue burning books, immolating people,

Re-exterminating the dreams of millions buried in their ashes,

Just so that we might never cease believing

That each one of us, individually, is capable of being God,

Deciding who, among creatures, breeds, conceives pristine offspring,

And who steps, shaved, naked, quaking, into the gas chambers,

That we might prove some souls are Chosen always to be subhuman,

While others are destined to climb the superhuman heights of the Reich.
