Self-Consciousness

To see ourselves as others see us

Is as easy as falling off to sleep

And never waking up.

Only trouble is,

Almost always, we never do —

Fall off to sleep — for being so awake

To the possibility that what we'll find

Won't be to our liking,

That we'll be the freak, monster, fiend

Peering into the two-way mirror

Disclosing nightmares beneath our dreams,

When we awaken into their endless sleep.

Perhaps for this reason alone,

We choose not to let our self-delusions doze,

Inviting others to see only our egos.
