Sunday Drive

Sunday was a meandrous day.

We were certain the TV meteorologists were out of their element —

Divining storm warnings, for later that evening —

Considering we were experiencing mid-sixties Florida warmth...

A perfect afternoon for an old-fashioned Sunday drive.

And what better way to satisfy this long-lapsed pleasure

Than to place a foot on the brake, press the keyless-ignition button,

And head west, out of Creve Coeur, for open roads —

A spell of motoring, in the mode both of us once loved so much,

Back in the fifties, when we were car-crazy teenagers.

Tortuous roads, following the contours of land still rural

Despite three decades of dense suburban incursion,

Yield a high degree of thrill no daily commute can.

And it sure enhanced the exhilaration,

Driving a sleek silver Corvette I purchased, earlier this week.

For more than an hour, you deftly maneuvered the high-tech Vette,

As if you were the female incarnation of Stirling Moss, Juan Fangio.

I was comfortable and confident, Linda, being your navigator,

As you manipulated, with the finesse of a texting expert,

The steering-wheel paddles, which ran through the six gears.

Once back at my apartment building, in Clayton,

Forty-seven miles and an hour-and-a-half later,

You brought the sexy, throaty sports coupe to a halt,

And I garaged our car. We drove to your home — dinner, the Oscars —

In my fifteen-year-old go-to-work Buick Roadmaster clunker.

Not thirty minutes after the Academy Awards concluded,

The ominous air was turbulent with tornado sirens.

We huddled, cuddled, in the hall of your basementless house,

Feeling safe enough to discuss Hollywood's winners and losers,

The meteorologists' accurate prediction, redrive our Sunday drive.
