Is

As a cardinal rule, one should never take anything for granted,

Rather always take advantage of every chance

To verify even the most oblique theory of relative irrelevancy,

Verify the least obtuse hypotenuses of introspective trigonometry,

Verify the efficacy of the principle of expanding contractions,

In a universe negating the infinitesimal necessity of infinity,

Verify the preposterous assumption, speculation, possibility

That the soul of man, at the moment of his spirit's demise,

Might not die, rather hover, possumlike, over its stiffening host.

After all, what is mortal existence if not a frenzied seizing of days,

A grasping of every last gasp of each passing second's passion,

Reminding us of our precious, blessed breath's evanescence,

The tenuous nature of our flash-in-the-pan flesh and bones,

The gift of existence we're given to possess, in temporal suspension,

A blessing made better if we're willing to confess our humility,

Admit that hubris is a dish fit only for the Prince of Sadistic Lies,

Not the King of Kings, the Epitome of Divinity, Holiness, the One,

Rejoice that our presence, here, now, is mystical, magical, miraculous.

And so it was, will be, must be, just has to be, is,

That I remind myself, this Friday night, isolated from all society but me,

That every breath I take, every affectionate gesture I make,

Every dawn I awaken, every rainbow I stake claim to,

At both ends of imagination's capacious, back-bending extensions,

Every prayer for grace I say, in the name of those broken beings

Who, but for God's grace, would be praying for my broken being...

That every colossal and minuscule notion should be reason enough

For me to believe I'm alive, to verify that the universe is.
