Tickets

Shamelessly, I confess that, since childhood,

I've been swayed by the powers of found objects,

Especially coins and occasional paper currency.

More infrequently than rarely,

I've been visited by twin tokens of good fortune —

Auguries, talismans, amulets, charms, phylacteries —

Such as the two tarnished cents I pick up, today,

From the floor guiding our feet toward security,

Screening passengers, at LaGuardia's Terminal D.

"How do you always find them?" you ask,

As I hand one of the pennies to you. "They find me.

These are our tickets for a safe flight home."
