Next August

"Where did you go?" "Where did you stay?"

"Did you see the Changing of the Guard?"

"Did you go to the top of the Eiffel Tower?"

Home, now, not quite half a week,

We've fielded these genuine inquiries of curiousity

As to the details of our trip,

The usual cursory questions from friends,

Which predictably elicit sighs of envy,

Vows to make their own romantic getaways,

Knowing, in most cases — many, anyway —

That the idea, notion, fantasy

Of traveling to distant, foreign places is daunting,

Because it requires confronting the unknown,

Tempting providence, taking chances,

Inviting change, breaking out of routine.

Unknown to anyone we've spoken with,

We've already begun to shuffle through options,

Possibilities for next August:

Moscow and St. Petersburg; Barcelona and Madrid;

Metaphor's shores; Forever's headwaters;

The confluence of our Are and Will Be.
