"Who's That For?"

Not all that many months before my mother let go,

I drove her to B'nai Amoona Cemetery,

Where, tomorrow afternoon, at 1:00, she'll be buried.

And as we slowly approached her husband's plot,

Came face to face with the Brodsky gravestone,

Incised, on its lower right,

With his name, dates of birth and decease,

Position of endearment in the family's genealogy —

"Beloved Husband, Father & Grandfather" —

She asked, with pristine innocence, pure puzzlement,

Referring to the blank space to the left of his name,

"Who's that for?,"

To which I tentatively replied, "That's for you, Nanny."

"Oh," was all she sighed.

But I knew, in that instant, she'd intuited soon's truth.
