Sunday Rain

All this gray morning, before and after church services,

The portent of rain has threatened to deny our hearts' craving

To spend part of the afternoon traipsing outdoors.

But before the bloated sky decides to vent its pent-up energy,

We're able to complete three circuits of Stacy Park's walking path,

Drive to the grocery store, to buy deli, garlic toasts, granola,

And arrive home, sit at the kitchen table, sip tea, talk.

The remainder of the evening is a suspension in your den,

Where we cozy on the sofa, listening to the gentle rain,

Accompanied by the shingles, sing melodies, ten feet above us,

As we eat, watch a movie — children under a tree's leafy shelter,

Safe within its nurturing embrace, our hearts' peaceful grace —

And stroke each other's legs, necks, cheeks, arms, toes,

Knowing sleep will share our deepest secrets, with the rain.
