256

Though I spent my wife's and my recent July 4 vacation, by myself,

Only five miles from my house, in Dogtown,

At Madame Fatima's Turko-Russian Baths

(Not a bone's throw from Reverend Carmine's Sun Don't Shine Mission,

Which puts out a sumptuously scrumptious smorgasbord

Of leftovers and discards from local jails, hospitals, and funeral homes),

I might as well have been a whole solar system, galaxy, cosmos, away,

In a cold black hole of even colder unnavigable black space,

For the forlorn and dogged alienation I'm suffering, this morning,

The first since I returned home, by yesterday's moonlight,

Awakened to face the desperation and anguished rage of faceless traffic;

The desolation that rises with hundred-degree heat vapors,

Mixes, like prussic-acid-gas crystals,

With enervating humidity, to unleash the demons of summer;

The isolation of laboring in laboratory X-5, creating new tinctures

For a final solution to America's growing pet-overpopulation apocalypse;

The mumbo-jumbo of my wife Daisy's dazing daily complaints

About my unwillingness to clean up the cages in her backyard puppy mill.

This unidentifiable Monday a.m., back in our breeder reactor of a castle,

As I dress in my flesh's best freshly pressed swaddling shroud,

I recognize the possibility that this dog-day morning, afternoon, and evening

Could be my best yet, the beginning of my new earthly reason for being,

The start of my soul's enlightenment, Renaissance from its Dark Ages,

The euphoria that consumes the worms that work to attack the heart,

Muzzle the mind, to keep it from seeking, finding humane justifications

For pulling the plug, the trigger, the rug out from under,

Every living, breeding, barking, biting, bone-burying bitch and bastard —

Those 256 scraggly, skinny, stinky, scrofulous, shit-stained cur-mudgeons:

Doberman Terriers, Great Dachshunds, Miniature Chihuahuas,

Dandie Dinmont Pinschers, Bichon Boxers, Greater Swiss Greyhounds, Maltese Schnauzers, Border Coonhounds, Chow Chow Retrievers,

Boston Spaniels, Basset Beagles, Pomeranian Poodle Pugs, Saluki Shih Tzus,

African Malamutes, German Wirehaired Harriers, and "unrecognized"s.

Tonight, I'm going to bring some work home with me —

256 prussic-acid pellets I've spent the past six months disguising

As "Doc Hockenkreuz's Yummy Almond-Flavored Schnitzel Bites."
