Finding Ourselves Lost

After three days in Amsterdam,

We've mastered the canals' persuasive convolutions,

Its seventeenth-century architectural contours,

Channeled our navigational sensibilities

Into the enchanting canting of its mystical grandeur.

Already, we've mapped the city's Centrum,

According to our hearts' explorations,

Step by step, cobble by cobble, island by island,

Our hand-in-hand eyes surveying, seeking and finding,

Concentric gracht by straat, bridge by bridge,

The source of this Dutch Masters painting,

That matrix of Dutch civilization, rendered, in oils,

By van Eyck, Rubens, Hals, Rembrandt, Vermeer,

Joyfully lost in the gentle mystique just being here evokes,

Knowing, now, that the Netherlands is in our keeping

And will keep us in its historical embrace.
