Time-Ripples

Time travel, in this lifetime of mine,

Reminds me of a spider leaping colossal stretches,

To get from its net's depths to the farthest reaches of its web's edges.

Every time I turn around, or so it never stops seeming,

I find myself turned upside down, with wonder and befuddlement,

Asking, "How did I arrive here, or so near here, so fast?"

And "How is it possible that you, my radiant daughter, Trilogy,

Were, just daydreams, sighs, gleams-and-glimmers-in-the-eye ago,

My precious little newborn, my front-hall-stairs climber,

My one-year-old, my kindergartener, my driving student,

My high-school and college graduate, a beautiful bride,

The glowing mother-to-be awaiting her baby, Tristan?"

And just like this, just like that, quicker than a rainbow's efflorescence,

Here we are, just the three of us, this Sunday night,

You, me, and my grandson, who makes young my seventy-one years,

Out to dinner, you and I, Trilogy, sitting across from each other,

The smiling little guy buckled into his highchair, at table's end,

His entire being beaming, for being spoon-fed a jar's worth of feast.

Even you express perplexity over where the days have gone —

"I can't believe Tristan's going to be one, in a month,

That he's got eight teeth, weighs twenty-two pounds,

And can take seven steps before he falls headlong, on his butt!

It seems like he and I were just in the maternity ward."

And now, I realize that you and I have no answers to our questions

As to how time, with neither beginning nor end, just in-betweeness,

Ebbs and waxes, wanes and flows, invisibly,

Rippling its gossamer web-net, with inconspicuous scrim-shimmers.

Suddenly, I can almost see you seeing me as an eighty-, ninety-year-old,

And I can barely hear you whispering, into my ear,

"Dad, let Tristan help you out to the car and drive you home."
