Assassination
Yesterday's national holiday,
Commemorating the January 15 birthday
Of our most revered civil-rights champion,
Could, by all estimates, pale, in resonance,
To today's potential "shock and awe"
In America's financial markets,
When the New York Stock Exchange opens,
After its fortuitous shuttering, Monday,
To honor Martin Luther King, Jr.
Waiting, on tenterhooks,
To hear how loudly the U.S. bear will growl,
The whole world is holding its breath,
Knowing it'll have to assassinate the beast,
Before the full impact of its ferocious roar
Reverberates around the globe.
