Feeding Frenzy

Hear tell that tonight's sole vice-presidential debate,

Held at Washington University in St. Louis,

Is being hailed as the great gladiatorial event of the season.

Network bigwigs are prophesying, with dollar-sign eyes,

That viewers of this televised Colosseum spectacle

Will outnumber, for the first time, any presidential set-to.

After all, whether one's of the red- or blue-state persuasion,

There's something to be said, in its own right,

For out-and-out blood sport, predation, death —

People living for NASCAR crash-and-burn catastrophes,

The demolition of buildings and bridges,

Even the possibility of campaign suicide, under stage lights.

Tonight, Americans are hovering over glowing screens,

Like vultures and turkey buzzards,

Waiting, voraciously, for the victim to be dispatched.

They're foaming at the beaks, salivating for the dead meat

Of an Alaskan elephant-moose-caribou in heat

Pacing in the wings, to make her anticipated entrance.

On this nail-biting, edge-of-the-seat Thursday evening,

The spectacle-starved nation is anxious to see, in prime time,

A braying polar bear make his merciless kill.
