One Vote at a Time
The lines lengthen, all across this egalitarian nation.
Each citizen is anxious, energized, excited
To exercise his/her franchise —
That inalienable right to a say-so in democracy,
That precious yes or no —
And leave the polling place, feeling patriotic pride.
This is the way we do it here, in America,
On the first Tuesday, in November, every four years —
Millions upon millions, one vote at a time.
By tonight, history will have made its tabulation,
Registered its final choice,
For the next President of the United States.
And when all of us awaken, tomorrow a.m.,
Though we won't see it, at first,
The landscape will have taken the shape of the future.
