Mandate for Change

An unconscionable thing is occurring, across America,

And I, like all of my compatriots,

Am being forced to bear witness to societal bankruptcy,

The disintegration of our privileged existences,

The systematic foreclosure of our mortgaged souls,

The inexorable reversal of our rags-to-riches ethic,

Precipitated by the consuming greed of Wall Street thieves —

Gilded Age robber barons, à la Henry James and Edith Wharton,

West Egg Gatsbys, of F. Scott Fitzgerald's era,

The Sherman McCoys, of Tom Wolfe's yuppie eighties.

Once again, the avaricious have drained the nation's lifeblood,

To satisfy their addictions for materialistic self-gratification,

Done their damnedest, by flaunting alpha-male testosterone,

To prove that they're the best in the business,

At stealing the blind blinder than a bat.

Tonight, I try to conjure how our society will sustain itself,

But I can't see Barack Obama's mandate for change

Changing anything other than the names of the thieves.
