Daring Comparison
Is it presumptuous, preposterously callous, absurdly surreal
To draw a comparison between today's assailed Gaza
And Nazi-occupied Poland's Warsaw Ghetto?
Do I perpetrate blatant exploitation, by equating the two,
Risk trivialization of, sacrilege toward, those who died
During that merciless incarceration of helpless Holocaust souls?
Or is it just possible that I'm not hyperbolizing,
Rather rubbing a raw nerve, exposing a grim similarity
With one monstrously ironic difference:
This time, the enemy seems, to much of the world, anyway,
To be the Jews, brutally, disproportionately inhumane
(400 Palestinians, four Israelis, dead, in less than seven days),
Killing civilians, with incessant aerial bombardments,
Destroying targets previously off-limits
(Mosques, government compounds, schools, homes),
Choking off food, fuel, medicine, to an entire population,
Threatening to level its cramped, impoverished sovereignty,
With tanks, mortars, rockets, foot soldiers — Einsatzgruppen?
But who am I (not an anti-Semite or a Muslim, indeed a Jew)
To dare suggest such a comparison, and yet...
Quick! Someone rebuke me! Shut me up!
