The Future's Future

Over the many years of my sojourn on Earth,

I've heard elders opine, meditatively, sagely,

"The past wasn't all that it's cracked up to be."

And honestly, who might be in a better position to judge,

Than someone with a broad perspective,

Who's helped write the history between then and now?

But never, as in these bleak days of the nation's desperation,

Have I encountered such young cynics, skeptics, saying,

"The future isn't what it used to be."

Though they know not of what they speak,

They're aware that something permanent has occurred,

Altered destiny's trajectory, disenfranchised mankind,

That all their hopes and dreams

Have been closed out, canceled, forgotten,

Relegating eternal optimism to perpetual ephemerality,

An inglorious mortality neglected by indifferent time —

The present's droning drone,

Doing everything to discourage tomorrow from dawning.

How sad that these fledgling generations can look at fate

And see in its cold eyes its colder soul,

Recognize that was, is, and will be are empty of redemption.
