On the Origin of Irreconciliable Species

Fundamentally,

America is suffering from a contagion of Christian conservatism,

Evangelicism of a perniciously obtuse persuasion.

Statistics tell us that, over the past two decades,

The percentage of the population that believes in Darwinism

Has actually diminished, from forty-five to forty —

A rather precipitous decline

Away from heuristic, reifiable confirmation of evolution,

To a belief that every word of the Bible is true,

That the estimation of Creation, based on the Book of Genesis,

As having occurred a mere six thousand years ago

(With the Garden of Eden accommodating prehistoric dinosaurs,

Despite the fact that those massive creatures roamed the globe

Some 450 million years back),

Squares perfectly with centuries of scientific thinking.

Why this nation of Nobel, Pulitzer, and MacArthur winners

Can't reconcile biology and religion,

See the disciplines as mutually compatible rather than exclusive

(The former studying the physical properties of organisms,

To explain how they develop over time,

The latter devoted to parsing the Word, for the meaning of life),

Is obvious enough to me and others who praise reason,

Put our faith in proofs based on critical observation

And replication by multiple sources, not in faith alone.

Tonight, I hear a flurry of pterodactyl wings stirring the air,

A thunder of tyrannosaurs shuddering the earth...

And William Jennings Bryan preaching Jesus, to the monkeys.
