A Timeless Time
Once upon a timeless time,
You assumed you'd always be,
Simply gave no heed to mortality.
Indeed, you were too busy being
To concern yourself with trivialities,
Too self-absorbed.
What's more, death was busy, too,
Had more important things to do,
Scores to settle, appointments to keep,
With destinies, fates, heads of state,
Soda jerks, undertakers, and such,
To make a fuss over you.
And so it was, in that timeless time,
Upon which, once, you stumbled,
Not just by chance, happenstance,
But not exactly matter-of-factly, either,
That always was part of being,
Forever as natural as breathing,
Until, one day, feeling neglected,
Then took umbrage with your smugness.
Stunned time shuddered,
So that, for the first time,
You noticed it had stopped
To notice you, too.
And in that timeless time,
Your busy being ceased.
Always and forever weren't.
