Blueberry Afternoon

This bracing Wednesday a.m.,

Chequamegon Bay and its surrounds

Form a vibrant still-life

In yellow, green, gray-white, and silver —

Yarrow plants interlacing ubiquitous sumac

And leafy birch and maple trees,

Argenteous sky and lake mirroring each other.

Soon, the day will be overlaid with dark blue —

Blueberries I'll pick, at Blue Vista Farm,

In the orchard hills high above Bayfield,

And take back with me, to Lake Nebagamon,

Northlands and Patriots in pint boxes

And on my fingertips, lips, and tongue...

That taste of blue lingering all afternoon.
