Dissention Among the Ranks

Admiral Michael Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,

Recently reported to the Senate Armed Services Committee

That America's top commander in Afghanistan,

General Stanley McChrystal,

Who hasn't yet requested more troops and equipment,

Is "alarmed" by the strength of al-Qa'eda and the Taliban.

Mullen expects that request to come any second now.

Democratic Senator Carl Levin, chairman of the committee,

Is skeptical of providing more forces, more time,

More commitment to nation building, in Afghanistan.

Senator John McCain, ranking Republican on the committee,

Sharply disagrees, sees failure to supply troops immediately

As a repeat of mistakes made in underestimating Iraq —

"In all due respect, Sen. Levin, I've seen that movie before."

Last week, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Reminded reporters that neither the Congress nor the country

Has any stomach for sending more resources to Afghanistan.

Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell told reporters, Tuesday,

That Bush-holdover Secretary of Defense Robert Gates

Hasn't yet made up his mind...

And President Obama stares into the graveyard of empires.
