Christmas

Christmas is to consumerism

What austerity and frugality are to asceticism.

Indeed, the former is so far skewed toward "reality,"

The latter so impervious to "relevance,"

In a society that worships material gratification,

Prays to a take-take-take savior,

A more-more-more messiah, preaching hedonism

Measured by the size of one's earthly thingdom,

That the birth of Christ and a person's detritus

Are perpetually construed as synonymous,

The true gospel, the light of the world,

While compassion and charity die, side by side,

On crucifixes of religious indifference,

And the human spirit asphyxiates on its own stench.
