Tone Deaf

Two-hundred-odd years after Ludwig van Beethoven

Composed his Piano Concerto no. 1, the Egmont Overture,

And his Symphony no. 3, Eroica (dedicated to Napoleon),

I'm home again, somehow, long past midnight,

Slumped in my overstuffed sofa, in my apartment, in my cups.

I think I attended the symphony, tonight — I really think so.

Indeed, if I can trust my copy of Playbill,

I did hear those three marvelous pieces

Performed by our vaunted St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

But if so, why am I trying to listen to them again, on CD?

Possibly, the answer lies at the heart of truth's perfect pitch,

Not at the depth of its inability to reach epiphany.

Beethoven's tone deafness was beyond tragic; it was heroic,

While mine, I'm beginning to suspect,

Was the product of a wine bottle and a performance-long slumber.
