Saul's Hotel Bills
Hotel bills random and scattered, an incomplete collection,
A mere redolence of his gospel of exponential wealth
In the name of Biltwell Co., of St. Louis —
His wanderings, by train, throughout the pre- and postwar forties,
During that decade when he solidified his grip on riches,
Ensured his family would never endure hardship, as he had . . .
Hotel bills recording the barest of facts, as to his activities,
On his buying and selling trips —
Long-distance calls, telegrams, restaurant charges, taxes,
Rates for day- and workweek-long rooms/suites/apartments
Where he'd showcase his samples (on mannequins and racks),
Swatch-card-bulging binders, promo materials, order pads . . .
Hotel bills immortalizing the nature and extent
Of his irrepressible zeal to surpass his ever-raised expectations,
Be accountable to nothing but his own unbridled drive
To be known, wide and far, as a self-made success,
A road peddler elevated to operating out of grand hotels . . .
All that's left of his energy, discipline, that twinkle in his spirit.
