Closeness

I

Close is always too far away.

It's only when close is superimposed on itself

That two souls know their closeness has coalesced.

II

With the warm, sensual gentleness

Of your slowly stroking fingers and thumbs,

You cradle my neck,

Trace the slope of my cheekbones,

Bring my eyes to climax —

Tears that fertilize our spirits,

With love's overflowing closeness.

III

Suggestions of your smooth breasts,

In dresses that caress your body

Like the flesh of a shimmering goddess,

Beckon me to guess,

In the closeness between looking and seeing,

Where you keep the secrets of your love-heart.

They're closer than my lips at your nipples.
