Our Art

The persuasion of this Tuesday's bracing, mist-glistening late-May air

Beckons us to stay indoors, not explore the historic Third Ward.

What a perfect excuse to liberate and chase fantasies,

Through Milwaukee's cruise-ship-contoured lakefront art museum.

And what better way to indulge our love of discovery

Than by escaping into the scapes of Chagall, Léger, Lawson, Monet;

The sublime lines of Isamu Noguchi's and Mies van der Rohe's furniture;

The marble and bronze sculptures of Barbara Hepworth,

Staged to let Lake Michigan's immensity frame their fluid sensuality;

The supple, bending plasticity of Harvey Littleton's decorative glass;

The tortured ceramic statue and chargers of Peter Voulkos.

For three hours, lost in the timeless indulgence of our shared passions,

We stroll the decks of this floating, landlocked vessel,

Discuss, with excited insight into each other's tastes, aesthetics,

Which works most illuminate our sensibilities, spark our empathy.

After all, we, too, have devoted our lifetimes to the pursuit of beauty,

Nurtured, set loose those emotions that most stir us

To create, from nothingness, with the tools of our imaginations,

Original intimations of the essence of our humanity,

Art, in the soul of choreography and poetry,

That transcends corporeality, transmutes truth into deathless forms.

Now, we return to the hotel, to shape our flesh into dancing stanzas.
