The Books

Judy's enchanted glass-and-wood fantasy house,

Built to follow the zigzagging crags of a moss-patched hill,

Is filled, from floor to ceiling to roof to sky,

With books on psychology, psychiatry, religion, history, poetry,

Provocative, unignorable, oft-daunting titles

Hoping we'll invite them into our conversations,

So they might infuse their ideas into our vibrant dialogues,

Volumes which have enhanced Judy's compassion,

That gentle kindness she weaves into her therapy practice.

Just now, we're awaiting the arrival of Denise, Marlene and Jim,

So that we can add a second beginning to our festivities.

Later this afternoon, we'll swim in nearby Lake Rippowan,

Then make dinner together, eat on the deck, facing the backyard-hill.

Tonight, we six will sleep in this enchanted fantasy house,

Dreaming dreams infused with the ageless pages.

And when we awaken from Sunday's slumber,

Each of us will find, in our souls, a presence of Judy's essence —

Her love of knowledge, her love of others, her love of us.
