Bread and Wine
The other day,
I met a friend, for lunch.
We discussed theology,
Especially how Catholics and Protestants
Disagree on the meaning
Of communion's bread and wine,
How the former see them
As manifestations of transubstantiation —
Literally as the body and blood of Jesus,
God's only son —
The latter as sacred symbols
Of the real spiritual presence of the Lord.
Both of us ordered
Just a glass of Chianti
Nibbled from a basket of focaccia
And toasted each other — "L'chaim!"
