The Sequel

One of the most nefarious and despicable of creatures I've ever seen,

Been exposed to, in newspapers and magazines, on TV screens,

Was that GOP darling with the Yale Skull and Bones pedigree,

Who stole the presidency not once but twice

And sold us, the U.S., into Afghan and Iraqi slavery,

That bring-it-on, Shock and Awe, Mission Accomplished sheriff,

That six-shooting, MIA-WMD vigilante/bounty hunter,

That Texas-kid-turned–The Texas Kid politician,

That stunningly blundering dunderhead of thunder-mug tumbleweeds,

Who rolled into D.C., for two terms of perfectly ludicrous stupidity,

Then back to the Crawford spider hole from which he'd crawled,

Leaving his sinister visionary legacy of preemptive war,

For his fellow evangelical believers in Jesus' saving grace

To perpetuate, promulgate, proselytize, for generations to come —

An eternal showdown with the eyes, faces, scruffy beards, weird turbans

Of the myriad camel-jockey Osama bin Saddam Hussein Ladens,

Whom he apocalyptically saw as wanting to sever America's head,

Force us to substitute shari'ah law for our Bill of Rights, Constitution,

Bow down to Allah, kiss the ground, bending Mecca-ward,

When we'd rather be watching the Super Bowl and Academy Awards,

Entering into fellowship prayer, with our blessed reverend Ted Haggard

And his fourteen-thousand-sheep-strong ministry at New Life Church.

OK, so you've stayed with me this painfully long,

Wondering where I might conceivably be going, roaming, straying

And whether I myself have the slightest idea as to my destination.

Well, I can tell you, if you'll just cut me some election-year slack.

What this entire diatribe, jeremiad, screed, tantrum, rant is all about

Is the disgraceful lack of civility in our political discourse, these days,

The outrageous lashings of the lip-whip, the image lynchings

That the Republican candidates have been inflicting on our black president,

Castigating him for not plunging us into Israel's inevitable war with Iran,

Not thrusting us into Shock and Awe: The Sequel mode, posthaste,

Committing our young whipping boys and girls, once again,

To crusading against an enemy that invented the tactics of shadow war,

Hoping to quagmire us, that we might eagerly deplete our resources,

Bankrupt our treasury, and become one of them —

A theocracy that worships the gods of poverty, ignorance, and nihilism.
