Formerly

When Savvy and Parker arrive at the airport,

We surrender our lives to their youthful exuberance.

After gathering up their shared bag,

We drive to Gamo's (formerly Granzo's) house,

So they can unpack; then, we beeline across Olive Street,

To Pumperpenny's (formerly Pumpernickel's),

For lox, cream cheese, onions, and bagels, for the girls,

Pancakes, for the nine-year-old (formerly a third-grader),

Egg salad, for the silver-haired (formerly towheaded) goat.

Having sated cravings, we vote yes to Gamo's suggestion

And hightail it to Old D's (formerly L.D.'s) high-rise,

To cool off in the pool, float on inner tubes and noodles,

Conduct our own St. Louis Olympics races,

In which Gamo's boyfriend (formerly Old D) always loses

To Aquaman (formerly Parker Kekoa Green).

After drying off, we long-march it to Happy China

(Formerly, no doubt, Happy's Laundromat & Dry Cleaner),

For the best (formerly) buffet in Creve Coeur.

Now, enervation descends upon the bloated goat,

Who traipses in, from the garage to the kitchen,

And plops into a chair, while the others plot what's next.

He (formerly full of vim, vigor, vitality, and vinegar),

Sighs, stretches, yawns, gasps, groans, moans, collapses,

So bushed he wishes some mythical deity's limousine

Would ferry him not even home but directly to Sandland,

To dream of the foursome's forever-tomorrows together,

When "formerly"s will be perpetual "currently"s.
