From a Promotional Brochure
Think. Guess who. Fill in the blank.
That something's missing should be the best clue.
Here's the promotional message (take as long as you need):
"Customers know that ________ has a personal interest
In maintaining the unblemished record of value, fair-dealing
And high ethical standards that has always been the firm's hallmark."
OK. So you're stuck, can't come up with anything at all.
You say the copy is self-aggrandizing boilerplate,
That it could be attributed to someone at almost any company —
You know, everything from Chinese consortiums
Manufacturing knockoff Fendi and Hermès designer purses
(For sale, by African illegals, on New York's sidewalks)
To life-insurance companies, in Abu Dhabi and Mogadishu,
Specializing in policies covering pet hippos and Indian cobras,
Taliban suicide bombers, Mexican drug lords and mules.
To be sure, I feel your uncertainty, your stupefaction.
Even so, take a stab in the dark night of your soul.
You just can't? Give up? Try "Bernard Madoff."
