This Last Afternoon

On this last afternoon of my protracted Independence Day stay,

Beside the shores of this tranquil lake,

I've staked out a modest claim on salvation.

I can't imagine any preoccupation more inspiring,

More spiritually enlightening,

Better for the nurturing of one's flesh and bones and mind,

Than spending unfettered time, alone, with time,

Listening closely to its rhythms, pacings, syncopations,

The subtle but scrutable wisdoms it makes available

To those of us who realize it's there/here for the taking, the keeping,

If only we can read the complexities of its ageless palimpsest,

Believe that it cares, intimately, about our well-being.

This matchless, eighty-degree last afternoon in Lake Nebagamon,

Time and I have have struck a covenant

Ensuring that neither of us will ever abandon the other.
