Never Abandon Me

Whenever I need to withdraw

Far, far from the daily catastrophes of the world,

I seek the most accommodating refuge for my heart and soul —

Poetry

(That redoubt, mighty fortress, Carcasonne) —

Knowing it alone can safeguard my equanimity,

Bring my senses to their senses,

Let me compose rhapsodies, fantasies, romances, tone poems,

In the eye of, at the height of, a hurricane,

Give me the courage to risk making naked my terrified spirit,

In the midst of suffering Pharaoh's, Hitler's genocides,

With faith that God will justify His divine design,

Allow me time to commune with my angels and demons,

Get on the right side of my destiny,

Not slip into history, through a slit in the fence, to the left,

Drown in the Sea of Reeds, burn to an Auschwitz crisp.

Ah, poetry, sweetest balm, anodyne, lover,

Never abandon me to my desperations!
