Another Story Altogether

Friday night, inside the Lawn Beach Inn,

Is another story altogether.

Business is busy, bustling, doing a land-office business,

As if Lake Nebagamon's only "fine dining" restaurant

Were the Carnegie Deli or the Starbucks on Times Square.

Every table in the joint is bristling with histrionic conversation.

They're talking fishing, hiking, camping, houses for sale,

During the height of America's mulish recession,

Its cratering-credit-crunch crisis of confidence.

And as if trying to make the economy go away,

Everyone's buying rounds for everyone else,

Ordering double helpings of comfort food, for themselves.

By the time the protracted happy hour draws to a close,

The recession has receded into an irrational-exuberance bubble,

Which will float the customers home, on its hot air...

Until tomorrow morning's wake-up hour,

When aching heads, rumbling stomachs, and empty pockets

Will remind them that life's another story altogether.
