A Humble Understanding
To see the invisible, speak the ineffable, know the unknowable,
Reach a state in which the presence of the sacred
Manifests itself, to us, in things mundane,
Is, ultimately, the be-all and end-all of life's holiness,
Its epiphany and apotheosis.
Some achieve this through embracing the ancient sacraments
(Baptism, holy orders, confession, confirmation,
Marriage, extreme unction, Eucharist),
Others through the lenses and shifting prisms of drugs, alcohol,
Transcendental meditation, communion with nature.
Then there are those who profess, through poetry's filters,
To be in touch with the essence of existence
Just by their taking time to be mindful, attentive,
Employing symbol, rhythm, metaphor, image, simile, and rhyme,
To distill, from the ordinary, the sublime.
No matter by what evocations, divinations, inspirations
We come to a humble understanding
That we owe obeisance to something grander than our command,
What's crucial is that we do so,
That we might free ourselves to recreate God, in our image.
