July 8, 1970
I scan today's date
In the upper-left column of this morning's newspaper —
July 8, 2010 —
And pause,
To allow all my whirling, swirling, turning cogs and gears
Time to clear away the cobwebs, collect their wits,
Settle into a pattern, momentarily,
That might let right-this-minute cast back,
Forty years,
To that sunny, clear-blue Sutro Park Wednesday a.m.,
When you and I,
In the full flower-powering of our innocent youth,
Nervously took our vows,
Our first steps together-ever-after,
Then left San Francisco,
Headed east, for Farmington,
Toward our uncharted, two-decade destiny,
Our two beautiful children, our sorrowed parting...
That glorious, epiphanic, forty-years-ago moment,
Which lives, this morning, in my soul,
As an eternally glowing halo.
