Our Starting Point
"Three-day vacation," "getaway," "extended weekend," "escape" —
By whatever name, turn of phrase, buzzword we call it,
It's all the same, in our gradually unfolding history:
One recently completed, outrageously fantástico,
Absolutely not-to-be-forgotten nonstop odyssey to Chicago,
That still-reverberating soul-sojourn of a mere fifty-two hours,
On whose slipstream-afterglow we flew back home, to St. Louis,
Where, the next day, we attended a worship service,
Brunched at Duff's, traipsed through Forest Park, the zoo,
Attended a magic show, before dining late, at Herbie's...
None of it quite the Windy City's whirlwind/carousel/kaleidoscope
And yet a dazzling rush of fun, nonetheless,
One that will help buoy us until wanderlust again beckons,
Transports our spirits to the next evanescent fantasy,
Then returns us to the place where our voyages always begin.
